Counter stool vs bar stool height: how to choose
Wrong stool height is one of the most common clearance mistakes we see: a bar seat under a 36" island leaves no room for knees, and a counter seat under a raised bar leaves you climbing. This guide is for shoppers comparing curated finds — measure the work surface, pick the seat band, check overhang depth and walkway clearance, then see how our two live Black Friday counter stools fit.
1. Counter height vs bar height at a glance
Most kitchen islands and peninsula seating match the surrounding counters at about 36" high. Raised bar tops usually sit about 40–42". The seat should leave roughly 10–12" between the top of the seat and the underside of the surface:
| Surface | Typical height | Seat height band | Stool type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter / island work surface | ~36" | ~24–26" | Counter stool |
| Raised bar / pub ledge | ~40–42" | ~28–30" | Bar stool |
Measure to the underside of the overhang if you can — that is the plane your thighs clear. If your surface is between bands (for example 38"), stay in the band that keeps 10–12" of clearance rather than the marketing label on the stool box.
2. Knee space and overhang depth
The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Kitchen Planning Guidelines give seating clearances by counter height:
- 36" high counters: 24" wide × 15" deep knee space per diner
- 42" high counters: 24" wide × 12" deep knee space per diner
That depth is why overhang matters. A shallow lip under 12" often forces a backless stool that tucks farther in, or a seat that feels too far forward. Tape the overhang depth on the floor and sit in a chair of similar seat height before you order. For walkways behind seated diners, NKBA traffic clearances match the dining guide: 32" with no traffic behind, 36" to edge past, 44" to walk past — and main walking surfaces should stay at least 36" wide (ADA Standards 403.5.1).
3. Backless vs swivel (and low back)
- Backless — smallest footprint under a shallow overhang; easier to push fully under when not in use; no lumbar support for long sits.
- Swivel with a low back — easier to turn toward conversation or the room; the back adds a few inches of depth, so confirm overhang and aisle clearance.
Neither style changes the seat-height rule. Both of our live clearance stools are counter height and list a 275 lb weight rating — choose by seat height within the 24–26" band, footprint, and whether you want the swivel.
4. How our two live counter stools fit
| Piece | Seat height | Footprint (approx.) | Back / swivel | Weight rating | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Boucle Swivel Counter Stool, White Oak | 25.8" (counter) | ~17"W × 17"D × 26"H | Swivel, low back | 275 lb | $169 |
| Backless Boucle Counter Stool | 24.6" | ~19.7"W × 15.2"D × 24.4"H | Backless | 275 lb | $189 |
Both: sold individually, shipping included to the lower 48 and DC. Under a standard 36" counter, the swivel leaves about 10.2" of seat-to-underside clearance and the backless about 11.4" — both inside the common 10–12" comfort band. They are not bar-height seats for a 42" ledge.
Seat-height helper
Enter your counter or bar height (to the underside if you can). We suggest a seat band and note how our two live stools compare. Inches throughout.
5. Before you order online
- Measure surface height and overhang depth; mark stool footprints on the floor.
- Walk the route behind the seats with chairs pulled out (NKBA 32 / 36 / 44").
- Confirm seat height is listed in inches, not only “counter” or “bar” on the label.
- Check total cost with shipping, the seller’s legal name, and refund if they cannot fulfill — the FTC’s online shopping advice covers records and shipment timing. On our finds, if we cannot fulfill, you get a full refund — see returns.

Quick answers
- What seat height do I need for a 36 inch kitchen counter?
- Aim for a counter stool seat about 24–26" so you keep roughly 10–12" under the counter. Our live swivel stool is 25.8" and the backless stool is 24.6". Use the seat-height helper above.
- What is the difference between a counter stool and a bar stool?
- Height only, for fit purposes. Counter stools pair with ~36" surfaces (seat ~24–26"); bar stools with ~40–42" bars (seat ~28–30"). Do not put a bar seat under a standard counter.
- How much knee clearance and overhang do I need under a counter?
- About 10–12" seat-to-underside. NKBA recommends 24" × 15" knee space at 36" counters and 24" × 12" at 42" counters (Kitchen Planning Guidelines). Measure overhang depth before you buy.
- Should I choose a backless or swivel counter stool?
- Backless tucks farther under shallow overhangs; swivel with a low back turns toward the room more easily. Both live stools are counter height and rate to 275 lb — pick by footprint and whether you want the swivel.
