Clearance furniture glossary
Shopping last-call furniture is easier when the jargon is plain. These definitions are original notes from how we curate and sell — not a legal dictionary. Where a public safety or consumer agency has published guidance, we link it so you can read the primary source.
Clearance furniture
Pieces offered at a deep discount because a line is ending, a warehouse is clearing, or stock must move. Clearance is about price and availability, not a free pass on quality. We still look for build, finish, and fit before we list a find.
Clearance curator
A seller who shortlists a few last-call pieces worth owning instead of flooding a catalog with every bargain. Our bar: honest freight timing, our listed price (no fake “was” tags), and a full refund if we cannot fulfill. See how we curate clearance furniture.
Freight delivery (furniture)
Shipping for large, boxed furniture — often LTL (less-than-truckload) — measured in weeks, not two-day parcel. For beds and recliners we usually quote about 2 to 4 weeks; many nightstands land in about 1 to 3 weeks. Details: bedroom furniture freight delivery.
Threshold delivery
Also called curb, porch, or first-dry-area delivery. The driver drops cartons at a covered entrance or similar spot. You (or helpers) bring them inside, unpack, and assemble. White-glove room placement is a different, paid service when it is even available.
Tip-over / anti-tip anchoring
Securing top-heavy furniture so it cannot fall forward when drawers open or someone climbs. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign is the public education home for this hazard: use sturdy furniture, install anti-tip hardware, and keep climb temptations off tall tops. Clearance finds need the same habit. Practical steps: bedroom furniture safety checklist.
Veneer
A thin layer of real wood bonded over a stable core (often engineered wood). It looks and feels like wood without the cost of solid slabs. Veneer and cores can swell or separate when soaked — NC State Extension notes that particleboard and fiber cores damaged by water often cannot be fully restored, and veneered repairs are usually best left to a skilled pro (Flood-Damaged Furniture). Day to day: wipe spills fast, avoid standing water on the top, and skip harsh scrubbing.
USB nightstand
A bedside table with built-in USB and/or AC outlets, usually on the back edge of the top. You still need a wall outlet within cord reach; ports do not replace house wiring. Compare styles in USB vs traditional and sizing tips in the USB nightstand buying guide.
Wall clearance (power recliner)
The gap behind a power recliner so the back can recline without hitting the wall and so the power cord is not pinched. Measure before delivery day; freight timing does not change physics. Step-by-step: how to measure for a recliner. Mechanism tradeoffs: power recliner vs manual. Full buying notes: power recliner buying guide.
Platform / storage bed
A bed frame that supports a mattress on slats or a deck (often no box spring). A storage bed adds drawers under the deck — plan drawer swing clearance in the room. Full-size fit notes: full storage bed buying guide.
Extension cord (temporary only)
A temporary bridge to a wall outlet — not permanent wiring. The Electrical Safety Foundation International advises against substituting cords for installed outlets, covering cords under rugs, or daisy-chaining strips. Prefer a nearby wall receptacle for USB nightstands and power recliners.
Online order ship timing (US consumer rule)
When you buy furniture online, federal Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order rules matter for shipment promises. The FTC’s online shopping advice summarizes the consumer side: sellers must ship as advertised; if no time is stated, they generally must ship within 30 days; delays require notice and a chance to cancel for a refund. Our storefront states freight windows in weeks and refunds in full if we cannot fulfill — read shipping and returns before you buy.

Quick answers
- What does threshold delivery mean for furniture freight?
- Threshold or first-dry-area delivery usually means the carrier leaves cartons at the doorway or garage apron. Someone should be home to accept, then you move pieces inside and assemble. It is not white-glove room-of-choice placement unless that service is booked separately.
- How fast must an online furniture seller ship under US consumer rules?
- Under the FTC Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, sellers must ship within the time they promise. If they do not state a time, they generally must ship within 30 days of receiving the order and payment details. If they cannot, they must notify you and offer cancel-for-refund or accept a new date. Read the FTC consumer pages for the full picture.
- Should clearance dressers and nightstands be anchored?
- Yes when a piece is top-heavy or can tip with open drawers or climbing. CPSC Anchor It! urges securing furniture and following manufacturer anti-tip instructions. Clearance status does not change tip-over physics.
