Buying furniture online: a practical checklist

Ordering furniture from a website is different from walking a showroom floor. You cannot sit the piece first, and delivery is often freight — not a small parcel on your porch by tomorrow. Use this checklist before you pay. It is original guidance for shoppers; always read the seller’s own shipping and returns pages, and the manufacturer instructions that ship with the piece.

1. Measure the path — not only the room

Fit fails more often in the hallway than in the final corner. Before checkout:

More doorway and drop-off detail: bedroom furniture freight delivery.

2. Confirm freight type and who must be home

Online listings often say “free shipping” without saying what that means. Confirm in writing:

Our policy page: Shipping.

3. Payment, seller identity, and refund clarity

Before you enter a card, know who you are paying and what happens if stock moves. The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping advice is a clear consumer checklist: keep records, know the seller, and understand shipment timing. Under federal Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order rules, sellers must ship within the time they advertise (or generally within 30 days if none is stated) and must notify you of qualifying delays with a chance to cancel for a refund.

4. Power outlet plan for powered furniture

Power recliners, USB nightstands, and other plugged-in pieces need a real outlet plan on delivery day — not a surprise cord stretch across a doorway. The Electrical Safety Foundation International treats extension cords as temporary bridges, not permanent wiring, and warns against running cords under rugs or daisy-chaining strips.

Tip-over and bedroom placement habits still apply to other pieces in the same room — see the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Anchor It! campaign and our bedroom furniture safety checklist.

5. Inspect on arrival, then place safely

Quick answers

What should I measure before ordering furniture online?
Measure the piece dimensions from the listing, then the path into the room: front door or building entrance, hallway turns, stairwells, elevator cab if any, and the final doorway. Note the tightest width and the tallest step or turn. For recliners, also check wall clearance and open length — see how to measure for a recliner.
What freight type should I confirm before I pay?
Confirm whether delivery is threshold / first dry area, room-of-choice, or white-glove, and whether someone must be home. Most large clearance pieces use threshold drop-off — you move cartons inside. Ask for the typical timing window in writing (often 2 to 4 weeks for US freight).
What payment and refund details should be clear before checkout?
Know who the seller is (legal business name), how cards are processed, the shipping window, damage claim steps, and what happens if the seller cannot fulfill. Federal Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order rules require sellers to ship as advertised or give you a chance to cancel for a refund when delays apply.
Do power recliners need a wall outlet?
Yes. Power recline and power headrest motors need a nearby outlet. Prefer a wall receptacle over treating an extension cord as permanent wiring. Keep cords out of foot traffic and never run them under rugs. Compare mechanisms in power vs manual.
