How to place a low storage cabinet
A low clearance storage or accent cabinet is useful only if it fits the wall, leaves a walk path when the doors are open, and is anchored before you load it. This guide is for shoppers comparing curated finds — wall run, depth into the room, door swing, tip-over hardware, weight limits, cord access for a router or media box, and whether a boxed delivery will clear your doorway.
1. Wall run and depth into the room
Tape the cabinet’s footprint on the floor before you pay. Width is the wall run you need; depth is how far the piece steps into the room. Our two live low cabinets sit about 31.5" to 38" wide and about 16.6" to 17.2" deep — deeper than a nightstand, shallower than many dressers. Leave a little air behind the piece if you need cord access through the rear hole, and do not park the cabinet where open doors will clip a bed corner, radiator, or curtain.
2. Door-swing clearance and walkway width
Soft-close doors need clear space in front equal to roughly the cabinet depth when they swing open 90 degrees. After that, keep a walk lane. Main routes people use every day should be at least 36" wide, which matches the minimum clear width for walking surfaces in the 2010 ADA Standards (403.5.1). A path that only works with the doors shut is not a finished layout — open both doors with painter’s tape on the floor and walk the route once before you order.
3. Tip-over anchoring
Low cabinets still tip when doors are open, shelves are loaded high, or someone leans or climbs. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign urges households to secure furniture so it cannot topple. Both of our live storage cabinets include anti-tip hardware — install the kit into a suitable wall attachment (a stud when the kit requires it) as soon as the piece is placed. Keep climb temptations and heavy decor off the top. Full habits: our bedroom furniture safety checklist.
4. Weight limit — what not to put on top
Both live pieces list a 100 lb weight limit. Treat that as the total the piece is designed for, not a license to stack dense boxes on the top surface. Prefer heavier contents on the lower adjustable shelf so the center of gravity stays down. Do not place a TV on a cabinet that is not rated as a TV stand — for screen width, foot span, and stand ratings, use the TV stand size guide instead. Soft baskets, folded textiles, and a lamp within the limit are safer than stacked books or a heavy aquarium on top.
5. Cord access for media and router use
Both live cabinets have a cord access hole so a router, modem, or streaming box can sit inside with power and network cables routed out. Plan the wall outlet before assembly. The Electrical Safety Foundation International treats extension cords as temporary tools, not permanent wiring — prefer a nearby wall outlet over a long cord run under rugs. Do not overload a single outlet with heat-producing adapters stuffed behind closed doors; leave ventilation space around powered gear.
6. Doorway fit for boxed delivery
These pieces ship boxed to your door or curb (typically 1 to 3 weeks after payment to the lower 48 and DC; shipping included). You carry cartons inside and assemble. Measure the clear door opening with the door open 90 degrees — the ADA Standards (404.2.3) set 32" as the minimum clear width for an accessible door; many closets, bathrooms, and older interiors are narrower. Assembled width is only a hint: cartons are usually larger than the finished piece. We do not publish carton dimensions on the product pages — ask us for carton dims if stairs, elevators, or a tight door are in the path. More delivery detail: shipping and freight delivery guide.
Our two live clearance storage cabinets
| Piece | W × D × H | Price | Assembly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arched Oak Storage Cabinet | ~38" × 17.2" × 31.7" | $419 | ~60 min |
| Black Sculpted Door Cabinet | ~31.5" × 16.6" × 31.7" | $259 | ~90 min |
Both: soft-close doors, adjustable shelf, cord access hole, 100 lb weight limit, anti-tip hardware included. Shipping included to the lower 48 and DC.
Placement fit checklist
Enter your wall run, the walkway width you need after doors open, and your clear door width. We compare each live cabinet’s assembled width to your wall and door — carton sizes are unknown, so a “doorway likely OK” result still means ask us for carton dims if the path is tight.
Online purchase checks
Before you pay for any clearance cabinet online, confirm total cost with shipping, the seller’s legal name, refund if they cannot fulfill, and damage claim steps in writing. Keep order confirmations and photos of cartons on arrival. The FTC’s consumer advice on online shopping covers seller records and shipment timing. On our finds, if we cannot fulfill, you get a full refund — see returns. Broader checklist: buying furniture online checklist.

Quick answers
- How much walkway clearance do I need in front of a storage cabinet?
- Leave enough depth for the doors to open fully (roughly the cabinet depth again), then keep a walk path. Main walkways should be at least 36" wide (ADA 403.5.1). Use the placement checklist above.
- Do I need to anchor a low storage cabinet?
- Yes. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Anchor It! campaign urges households to secure furniture so it cannot tip. Install the manufacturer anti-tip kit as soon as the piece is placed. Full habits: bedroom furniture safety checklist.
- What can I put on top of a 100 lb weight-limit cabinet?
- Keep heavy items low on the shelf, not stacked on the top. Do not place a TV on a cabinet that is not rated as a TV stand — see the TV stand size guide. Soft decor and a lamp within the limit are safer than dense top loads.
- Will a boxed storage cabinet fit through my doorway?
- Measure clear door width with the door open 90° (ADA 404.2.3 sets 32" as the accessible minimum). Assembled width is only a hint — ask us for carton dimensions if the path is tight.
