USB nightstand vs traditional nightstand
A traditional nightstand is a surface and a drawer. A USB nightstand adds built-in power so phones, lamps, and CPAP-adjacent gadgets stop fighting one wall outlet behind the bed. Here is how to decide which fits your bedroom.
1. Power where you need it
Traditional: you run a lamp cord and a charger brick to the wall — often behind the headboard. Power strips pile up on the floor.
USB / powered: AC and USB sit on the back edge of the top. You still plug the nightstand into the wall once, then charge devices without a brick on the surface. Best when the wall outlet is reachable with the included cord (or a short, safe extension).
2. Cord clutter
Powered tops win if you charge every night. Traditional tops stay cleaner visually if you barely use bedside electronics — or if you prefer a wireless pad on the surface instead of built-in ports. Neither style fixes a wall outlet that is too far away; measure that first.
3. Size and height still matter more than ports
Match height to your mattress top (or slightly below). Roughly 22" wide and 18" deep suits most full and queen setups. A USB nightstand that is the wrong height is still the wrong nightstand. See the USB nightstand buying guide for outlet placement and veneer care.
4. When traditional is enough
- You already have a lamp with a convenient outlet path
- You charge in another room
- You want the simplest, lightest piece and do not need built-in USB
5. When USB is worth it
- Phone and watch charge on the nightstand every night
- You want the top free of bricks and strips
- Rear-mounted outlets keep the face of the piece clean
- You are fine with freight timing on a clearance find
